From Homeless to Hopeful

Dorian's story

Before his time at Anchor House, Dorian’s hard work had led him to a full-ride football scholarship at FAU. All he’d ever wanted was to play football, and this dream was finally about to be a reality.

Things took a turn for the worse when Dorian tore his ACL, causing him to lose his scholarship, housing, and meal plan. Since football supported him financially, he had no job to fall back on.

As his family had never really seen him play football, when he reached out for help, they were reluctant to support his dream. This left him couch-hopping, sleeping on park benches, and homeless.

As he had little luck applying for jobs, Dorian was left depressed and hopeless. While he began questioning who was there for him, he knew God always was.

Things started looking up when his brother connected him with our Life Skills Specialist, Miguel Garcia, who welcomed him into one of our transition homes. Through Anchor House’s support, Dorian was able to find a job and community while even having his college tuition paid for. From our staff building relationships with him, Dorian was even able to strengthen his relationship with his family.

While Anchor House has supported Dorian, his talent and drive speaks for itself. Dorian is now working, attending college, and playing football for FCC. If he keeps up the hard work, he believes his football dreams can become a reality.

He continues to lean on God through it all, knowing that if he keeps God first, He will bless him. When asked what he wanted people to take away from his story, he shared his life verse: Joshua 1:9 - “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
